As San Jose struggles to find places to dispose of waste due to China’s recent ban on importable recyclables, the city’s need for efficient waste management systems has never been greater. Problems like environmental degradation and public health issues from overflowing waste bins and containers are far too dire to be ignored and call for applications like provides waste management systems an IoT device that captures and displays real-time waste analytics.

Using a sonic sensor, the IoT device tracks the current level of waste in a container and pings servers whenever an item is thrown in. Using Amazon Web Services,’s IoT device is able to send waste information to a database. The data is then queried and served up to a client web application that utilizes ArcGIS, a geographic information system to provide a map of serviceable waste bins and containers and D3.js, a JavaScript library that produces interactive data visualizations to provide real-time waste analytics.

Providing real-time analytics to waste management services will enable them to eliminate waste overflow as well as save time, fuel, and manpower by knowing what regions where waste disposal is more prolific. Moreover, the quantity of data transmitted will enable San Jose to create predictive models based on waste and track the effectiveness of current waste reduction programs.
